10th Anniversary Celebration at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center

The August Wilson African American Cultural Center proudly presents the 10th anniversary celebration of the Poetry Unplugged series with this year’s edition, Poetry Unplugged: Still Dreaming!, presented by Citizens—a powerful evening of spoken word honoring the enduring life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This milestone event brings together an extraordinary lineup of Pennsylvania-based poets who will speak truth to power, illuminate today’s ever-shifting social climate, and remind us of the collective resilience found in Dr. King’s dream.

Curated and hosted by Orlando Watson—Governor for the Recording Academy’s Philadelphia Chapter and a member of the Academy’s Spoken Word Poetry National Committee.

This year’s program promises a stirring blend of artistry, activism, and authentic storytelling. The night will feature a special appearance by 2026 GRAMMY-nominated songwriter, Khemist Mayfield of Philadelphia, whose lyrical depth and musicality continue to redefine contemporary poetry and hip-hop. Joining him on stage are some of Pittsburgh’s most electrifying poets:

  • Diarra Imani
  • Thembisile Gxuluwe
  • Devantae Butler
  • Leslie Ezra Smith
  • Shockie G
  • Mike Smalls, 2025 AWAACC Century Cycle Poetry Slam Champion

Setting the sonic atmosphere is Selecta, a viral Twitch DJ known for genre-blending sets that amplify the energy of every room he touches.

Join us as we celebrate a decade of poetic expression, cultural truth-telling, and community healing—and continue dreaming forward.

Presented by Citizens.
